Managing Soil Acidity in Permanent Pastures

Join Holbrook Landcare Network, Charles Sturt University and NSW DPIRD for a field day at the Mannus lime demonstration site. The day will allow producers and advisors to discuss effective top-dressed liming strategies in permanent pastures in the southern slopes of NSW.

About the Producer Demonstration Site

The ‘Managing Soil Acidity in Permanent Pastures’ producer demonstration site is investigating the most effective top-dressed liming strategy in non-arable pasture systems where lime incorporation is not possible or preferred. It aims to demonstrate that improved monitoring of soil pH profiles and adapting liming application rates and timing to meet higher pH targets will improve pasture production and composition and therefore the profitability and sustainability of permanent pasture systems.

Topics for discussion

  • Acid soil management – Effective ways of monitoring and managing soil pH. What impact has lime had on local lime demonstration sites.
  • Liming effect on pastures – Active legume management in productive high rainfall/high altitude pastures. What lime response can we expect in pastures.

Guest speakers

  • Dr Jason Condon – Associate Professor in Soil Science, Charles Sturt University
  • Dr Richard Hayes – Senior Research Scientist, NSW DPIRD
  • Nick McGrath – Project Officer (Soils), Holbrook Landcare Network
