Save the Date: Making Better Nitrogen Decisions This Season

Save the Date: Making Better Nitrogen Decisions This Season

With urea prices high, seasonal conditions still unfolding and cost of production front of mind, many growers are again weighing up one of the harder decisions of the season:

How much nitrogen should I apply, when should I apply it, and what level of risk am I comfortable carrying?

A practical grower workshop will be held at Burrumbuttock on Thursday morning, 23rd July, as part of RiskWi$e, a national GRDC and CSIRO initiative focused on helping grain growers better understand risk and reward in farm decision-making.

This workshop will focus on urea application and fertiliser topdressing decisions for this season. It is not about telling growers what to do or give growers a one-size-fits-all solution. [C1] Instead, it will work through a practical process to help growers think more clearly about the decision in front of them for their situation, factoring in price, seasonal outlook, yield potential, cashflow, confidence, risk and opportunity.

The session will also explore how you make decisions.  We’ll explain how facts and figures, past experience, gut feel, practical constraints, confidence, bias, family or business pressures, and risk comfort influence your decision making and what you can do to give yourself confidence you’ve made the best decision possible for this season.

This workshop will be located on a farm that’s home to a number of trials so this will also be an opportunity to update you on other research occurring in your area.

We know growers are busy and we do not want to waste anyone’s time. The aim is for this to be a practical, useful morning that helps growers think through one of the key decisions of the season and take away something they can apply in their own business.
