Greater Hume Council and NSW DPI are undertaking three days of surveillance in the Mountain Creek around the Woomargama township later this month. The floods in November and subsequent events have the potential to have spread the infestation of Alligator Weed – an aquatic Weed of National Significance downstream of Woomargama. This weed has had an annual control program upstream of the village but it was recently found below the bridge where it hasn’t been detected before.

We are asking downstream landholder to be alert to it – Alligator weed is a potentially devastating weed that grows in water and on land, affecting both waterways and floodplain areas. Alligator weed has extremely vigorous growth and great tolerance of normal control measures, which makes it a major threat to wetlands, rivers and irrigation systems, and it also infests floodplain areas.

We have copies of these posters in the Landcare Office you can take home.

There are some native plants that look like it, but if you see something you suspect is it please contact the GHC Weed Officers via the Toll free number 1300 653 538 or 0260 360100
